Not every day is the same. Sometimes it might just feel like hell broke loose all over you.
Even when you think life gave you lemons, you still have two options - you could squeeze them in other people’s eyes, or you could also make lemonade.
Had a rough day? Had your heart broken?
No matter what, it is not the end of the world, do you know why?
Because you are still alive!
Believe it or not, it’s almost a superpower. There is so much you can do. So, how do you smile, when you feel like crap? It’s a simple algorithm. Here are a few tips.
1. Accept the Reality
First things first, get real. It’s okay to be sad. You are not supposed to be happy all the time. Burying shit, is the worst thing you can do!
2. Get it Out!
Now that you have acknowledged you are feeling low, you might as well vent. You cannot avoid feelings. If you must, just cry, shout, scream, and let all that cluttered emotion out. Once that is done, now you have created a place for new feelings to fill up.
3. Talk to Someone
Most of the times, it does not go away with plain venting, because somewhere inside there is a desire to be understood. Pick up the phone and call a friend. Talk to someone who gets you. It will work like magic. I stress the importance of this one!
Now, Smile! It’s not that difficult. It might not happen instantly, but smiling is a great tool to lighten up your mood. It might seem silly, but it's science.
There’s a probably good reason behind photographers asking us to say “cheese” before they click. Slowly you will start to feel better. Like I said, it’s science.
Now that you have shaken a bit of that drowning feeling, ask yourself - isn’t there something that you really really want to do?
5. Do Something
There’s still something that makes you happy. For me, it’s accomplishing something. A personal best, a strong, intense workout always seems to do the trick for me - get your body moving!
You know what I really really like to do?
I like to cook, because when I cook, I get to make great food, and great food makes me happy anyway. Better yet, since I am cooking, I can make anything I want and just the way I like it. So, get out there and find the thing that you love to do.
You know what else I like to do when I am not in a happy mood?
I love challenges, so I go workout, find some contests, register and train for an event!
Last but definitely not least - get outside! Nothing makes you feel great like being in nature, being in the wilderness, go on a hike, go camping, get out there!
Also, It has been scientifically proven that playing video games can change your mood considerably, don't waste your whole day though! Speaking of science, watch a movie with a happy ending, even one that you have watched before.
I like to watch documentaries on successful people or expedition/adventure films! - ( "The way back" (2010) is a great one!
Always give yourself positive assurance, even if you feel broken. Being broken might as well turn out to be a good thing; after all, you can now put back the pieces like you want to.
It all begins by accepting the facts and developing a different perspective towards the situation. After all, we feel what we let ourselves feel!
