Sleep is real important for all of us, and we all need differing amounts depending on many factors.
Sleep quality is vastly affected by a number of things, and getting not only an optimal amount of sleep but a sleeping pattern is essential.
1. First things first... Plan tomorrow!
When you're striving for greatness in life, or simply have a lot going on, the last thing you want is to be lying in bed and be thinking about it all.
So in early evening (as its getting dark), plan your tomorrow - Get it all out of your head and onto paper or smartphone. Write a to do list even...
This will free your mind in the knowledge you'll be refreshed and ready to destroy your list in the morning.
Also if you do this early evening, it will give you some time to relax and take your mind off things.
Now Is the time also, to look back at todays work! Write down all that you have accomplished from yesterdays plan. If you do this on the regular, you'll feel a great sense of achievement and purpose.
2. Close off the day, and stop staring at screens!
Having a great sleeping pattern is essential to be at your best for the next day, personally I get to bed pretty early around 10pm, and am usually up and ready to go around 6am.
Respecting your body's natural cycles is important, when the sun goes down you should start to chill out, (Go harder in summer, learn to take your time in the winter) spend some time with your family or friends, and really close off the day.
Turn off your phone, put down your laptop, and if you're really hardcore turn off the TV! In todays world we stare at screens all day and night, these emit a very blue light slowing your bodies melatonin response down - keeping you up and awake for longer.
Apple have tried to combat this with their Night Shift mode, I do use this on my iPhone, and can say its more pleasant on the eyes in the middle of the night!
Whether it works, or not, I cannot say, as I simply avoid pretty much all screens after dark anyway.
I conclusion to this point: Make a conscious decision to put down the work!
4. Spend time with your Family & Friends..
Talk about your days, do it over dinner maybe, great relationships are built on communication and a sense of achieving things together.
Get it out of your head, and out into the open...
Have some fun! You get to live this one time, do the things you enjoy doing, and do them with the people you love. - This can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different people.
5. Read a Book...
Reading is a good way to learn, but in my opinion - No factual based/business books should be read before bed time!
Save them for throughout the day!
You're not trying to stimulate your brain into work mode!
Auto-Biography's and Fiction only folks!
6. Look at your long term goals...
Every morning when you wake, and every night before you sleep, check out your big dreams and long term goals.
Personally, we have created a vision board that hangs by the end of our bed, so we see our dreams and goals in full colour twice a day, every day!
Say them out loud if you have to...
7. Do not do any intense exercise!
A couple years ago, I used to run very intense fitness classes, boot camp style... All calisthenics, based on HIIT circuits.
Some of these wouldn't end until around 9 - 9.30pm.
Yes now they kept me seriously fit, but my god I couldn't get to sleep until at least midnight afterwards.
Intense exercise usually triggers a fight or flight response, not ideal if you're looking to get to sleep any time soon!
